Le Lt Bairnsfather a été témoin de la trêve de Noel à Ploegsteer en décembre 1914, blessé lors de la deuxième attaque d'Ypres en avril 1915, il fut rapatrié en Angleterre. Son effort de guerre pictural contribua à maintenir le moral du soldat Britannique.
